Shared Parental Leave
Shared Parental Leave (SPL) allows eligible working biological and adoptive parents in Singapore to share paid leave within 12 months of their child's birth or adoption to support caregiving and bonding. The government reimburses up to $2,500 per week of leave taken.
Overview
Shared Parental Leave (SPL) is a government-paid leave scheme under the Marriage and Parenthood Package in Singapore that allows working biological and adoptive parents to share up to 10 weeks of paid leave within 12 months from their child's birth or Formal Intent to Adopt date. The scheme supports parents in caregiving and bonding with their newborn or newly adopted child, with eligibility criteria based on citizenship, marital status, and employment status. SPL replaces the 2013 Shared Parental Leave scheme for children born from 1 April 2025 onwards and provides government reimbursement of up to $2,500 per week of leave taken. The scheme accommodates employed and self-employed parents, including single mothers and adoptive parents, with provisions for special situations such as multiple employment, stillbirth, and changes in citizenship status of the child.

Eligibility details
Eligible parents must be biological or adoptive parents of a Singapore Citizen child born or adopted on or after 1 April 2025. Biological mothers of all marital statuses and fathers married to the child's mother between conception and birth or within 12 months after birth qualify. Adoptive parents must have a Formal Intent to Adopt date on or after 1 April 2025, with the child below 12 months old and a Singapore Citizen or linked to a Singapore Citizen parent. Parents must be employed or self-employed for at least 3 continuous months before the child's birth or FIA date. Single mothers are eligible for full SPL, while single fathers may appeal. SPL is only available after maternity, paternity, or adoption leave is fully consumed and must be taken within 12 months from the child's birth or FIA date.
How to apply
Parents should discuss leave plans with their spouse and employer before the child's birth or adoption. Sharing arrangements are submitted via LifeSG during birth registration or within 4 weeks after birth/FIA date. Changes to sharing arrangements within 4 weeks do not require employer agreement; changes after require written employer consent. Leave claims are submitted on the Government-Paid Leave (GPL) Portal after SPL is consumed. Parents should coordinate leave timing and blocks with their employers and ensure SPL is taken within 12 months from the child's birth or FIA date.
