Overview

DigitalMINDSET is a 6-to-9-month counselling intervention programme developed by TOUCH Community Services to help youths aged 12 to 21 manage excessive digital device use and improve emotional regulation.

Key features:

  • Individual and family counselling sessions focused on balancing device use with real-life responsibilities (e.g., school, work) and improving family interactions
  • Group-based components including experiential learning, group counselling, and excursions to reinforce goals and learning points
  • Skills-building in emotional regulation, stress-coping, distress tolerance, consequential thinking, and problem awareness
  • Family-focused work to address interaction patterns that may contribute to overuse and poor emotional regulation
  • Access to a helpline staffed by trained professionals for support and enquiries

Intended outcomes:

  • Reduce excessive device preoccupation (e.g., gaming, social media, streaming, VR) and its impact on daily functioning
  • Equip youths and caregivers with practical strategies to achieve a healthier digital-life balance
  • Motivate youths toward holistic wellbeing across different areas of life

Eligibility details

Youths aged 12 to 21 exhibiting: (1) both excessive device use and emotional regulation issues; (2) escapist behaviour; (3) risk of turning to device use due to poor self-management (e.g., emotional regulation issues); (4) unusually high device use preoccupation/investment that affects daily functioning (e.g., gaming, videos), possibly with irritability/restlessness when not using; and/or (5) poor management of emotional issues (e.g., anger, depressive symptoms) due to lack of screen time.
